Maverick Review
We were really pleased to have our album 'Going Across The Sea' reviewed in Maverick Magazine and not only did they like it but they gave it 5 Stars which is fantastic. Here's the review in full:
Natural old time country music with no airs and graces but plenty of oomph.
"I like this record but not because it's original or exciting, just because it's nice. A mixture of bluegrass, old-time country and folk, the music is mostly covers and new arrangements of old songs, featuring a lovely mix of complementary instruments such as fiddle, mandolin, guitar and double bass. (How could you forget the banjo? ed.) The 'boys' make no bones about the originality of the music and one gets the impression that it's up to us if we want to listen to it, they'd have recorded it anyway. Songs such as Going Across The Sea, an old-time song recorded way back in the 1920's and a really lovely instrumental heavy version of Lowell George's much-covered Willin'.
The boys' strength is in their incredibly tight instrumental base. The vocals are pleasant to listen to and the harmonies are adequate but what shines through is a clear love of the songs and and a musical tight-knittedness. the Derby-based band are all veteran musicians and performers with many years of gigging experience between them in Cajun and country bands. I imagine the delicious rawness of the disc is in part due to the fact that it's self-produced with no help from additional musicians or techno wizardry. It would be a damn shame if that ever changed as the result is a lovely sweet disc, which I shall certainly be listening to for some time to come. I'm off to find their gig list."
